Three reasons high-desert roofs age faster

- UV: We get roughly 18% more solar irradiance than the Pacific Northwest. UV breaks down asphalt binders and dries out the polymers in synthetic underlayments.
- Freeze-thaw: ABQ averages 60+ freeze-thaw cycles per year. Each one expands and contracts every fastener, every nail hole, every flashing.
- Thermal range: A summer roof can hit 165°F at the surface. Same roof can drop to 12°F on a January night. That 153° swing is brutal on every material seam.
What this means for product selection
Pay for the better underlayment. Pay for ridge venting. Buy shingles with high SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) ratings. The premium for cool-roof-rated materials is 8–12% and pays back in lifespan plus utility savings.
