UV degradation in New Mexico

We sit at 5,300 ft with 300+ sunny days. Asphalt-based roofs age faster here than almost anywhere in the country.

UV light breaks down the asphalt binder in shingles, modified bitumen, and tar & gravel. The granules protect the binder — when they wash away, the roof's clock starts ticking faster.

Reflective coatings, metal roofs, and white TPO all sidestep UV by reflecting most of it back.

A 25-year shingle rated in Ohio often gives you 15–18 years in ABQ. Spec your warranty against the climate you actually live in, not the box rating.
