Underlayment matters more than the shingle
On tile and metal roofs, the underlayment is what actually keeps water out.
Tile sheds most water — but anything that gets through has to land on the underlayment. Felt-paper underlayments fail in 15–20 years. Synthetic and self-adhered underlayments go 30–50.
When we lift tiles to replace underlayment, we can usually reuse 90%+ of the tile.
Cheaping out on underlayment is the single most common mistake we see on otherwise-nice tile installs. The labor to redo it later is the same; the material upgrade is a few hundred bucks.
