How to spot hail damage from the ground

You don't need to climb up. Five tell-tale signs you can check from your driveway.

1. Look at your gutters and downspouts — fresh hail dings show as bright unoxidized aluminum spots.

2. Check the AC condenser fins on the side of the house. If they're flattened or bent, the roof got hit too.

3. Look for granule piles at the bottom of downspouts and around splash blocks.

4. Inspect window screens, vinyl siding, and painted wood surfaces for round impact marks.

5. Check skylight domes and plastic vent caps — they crack before shingles bruise.

If you see two or more of these, call for a free roof inspection. Most NM insurers give you one year to file a hail claim, but the sooner the better.

What people say after James walks their roof

Three roofers wanted $32k after the June hailstorm. Roof Doctor NM walked the roof, took 84 photos, and said the hail was cosmetic. Saved me from a fraudulent claim.

Under contract on a Corrales house. The pre-purchase report caught two hidden layers the seller's disclosure missed. Got an $18k credit at closing.

Bid review flagged that the 'lifetime warranty' voided if we used the wrong underlayment — which the contractor had specced. Renegotiated the whole scope.
