Storm chaser red flags.

Every monsoon and hail event, out-of-state crews flood ABQ. Some are fine. Many vanish before the warranty is worth the paper it's printed on. Here's how to spot the bad ones.

Door-knocking within 48 hours of a storm

Why it's a problem: Local crews are slammed handling existing customers. Anyone knocking that fast traveled in from out of state.

Out-of-state plates on the truck

Why it's a problem: Look at the parking-lot. Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas plates after a hail event = chaser.

'We'll waive your deductible'

Why it's a problem: It's insurance fraud — illegal in NM. They'll either bill you later or do a half-job to cover their loss.

Pressure to sign 'authorization to inspect' on the spot

Why it's a problem: That document is often a contract assignment. Once signed, you can't choose another roofer for the claim.

No physical Albuquerque office address

Why it's a problem: Just a PO box, a Google Voice number, or 'we're based in town for the season.' Look up the address on Maps.

Wants to be paid the full insurance check up front

Why it's a problem: Reputable: 50% on material delivery, 50% on completion. Or insurance proceeds released in stages.

Bid is 30%+ below local quotes

Why it's a problem: Either they're skipping decking/underlayment/permits, or they plan to bill the supplement and disappear.

Pushes a manufacturer you've never heard of

Why it's a problem: Storm chasers buy whatever's cheapest at the supply house. Local crews stick with GAF, Owens Corning, Malarkey, CertainTeed.

Can't produce a current NM license number on the spot

Why it's a problem: Verify at rld.nm.gov. Out-of-state contractors must be NM-licensed to work here — even after a disaster declaration.
