Wind uplift is when a gust breaks the shingle's factory seal-strip bond and lifts the tab — even if the shingle doesn't blow off. Once the seal breaks, water can drive under the shingle at every future rain, the tab creases at the nail line, and the shingle is functionally dead. NM's spring wind season (40–70 mph gusts is normal) breaks seal strips on roofs as young as 3 years old.
Wind uplift leaves a creased line across the tab about ¾" up from the bottom, granules concentrated in one direction, and often an exposed nail head at the shingle above. Normal wear is granule loss across the whole tab evenly. I document each pattern with per-slope photos and NOAA wind-event correlation so it holds up to an adjuster.
