Can I mix ridge vents with gable or box vents?

Do turbine vents work in Albuquerque's low wind?

Yes on the West Mesa and East Mountains ridges. In sheltered NE Heights lots, ridge vents outperform turbines because they rely on convection rather than wind.

The ridge short-circuits the boxes and you end up pulling air FROM the boxes down into the attic. Pick one exhaust type.

Don't skip intake

Exhaust without intake is the #1 attic problem in ABQ. Vent stack pulls conditioned air out of the house instead of hot air out of the attic.

Don't paint soffit vents shut

Every re-paint we inspect has 20–40% of soffit NFA blocked with latex. Poke every hole open with a pick.

Balance intake ≥ exhaust

Slightly more intake than exhaust is ideal — it pressurizes the attic and blocks wind-driven rain intrusion at the ridge.

Baffles at every rafter bay

Insulation blocking the eave is the same as no soffit vents. Foam or cardboard baffles keep the path open.

Seal ceiling penetrations first

Recessed cans, bath fans, and top-plate gaps dump humid house air into the attic — no amount of venting fixes that.

IRC says total net free ventilation area = 1/300 of the attic footprint when intake and exhaust are balanced (roughly 50/50 low + high). Without a vapor barrier or unbalanced venting, code drops you to 1/150.

+Ridge vent or turbines?

Continuous ridge vent almost always wins in NM: quieter, no moving parts to fail, and stays balanced with the soffit intake. Turbines are fine if the ridge line is broken up, but two turbines rarely equal a full ridge run.

+Why do I have frost on the nail tips in winter?

That's condensation, not a leak — warm humid house air hits cold roof deck fasteners. Fix = more balanced ventilation and check bathroom fans are actually ducted outside, not just into the attic.
