What's my roof pitch?

Two ways to measure: rise-over-run from your attic, or angle-from-a-photo with your phone's protractor app. Either one gives us your x:12 pitch and what materials your roof qualifies for.

Method 1 · Rise over run

Level a 12" straightedge horizontally against a rafter. Measure the vertical drop at the tip (inches). That's your rise. Run is always 12.

Method 2 · Photo protractor
  1. Stand back from the house until you can see the full gable end.
  2. Take a level photo (portrait). Open it in any protractor app (iPhone Measure works).
  3. Measure the angle between the roof line and horizontal. Enter it below.
